How the C2C blanket size calculator works
One C2C square at worsted gauge is about 5/7 of an inch, so the calculator divides each side by that and rounds to the nearest whole square. A blanket W squares wide and H squares long has W + H − 1 diagonal rows. You increase on every row until you reach the shorter side, which is min(W, H) − 1 increase rows, then decrease on that side while the other side keeps growing, until both ends are decreasing.
Measuring your own gauge
Crochet a swatch of 7 × 7 squares with the yarn and hook you'll use, block it the way you'll block the blanket, and measure one side. Type the squares and inches into the calculator as squares per 5 in: if 7 squares measure 5.5 inches, that's 7 × 5 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 6.4. Most people's C2C squares come out slightly taller than wide, so measure both directions on a big blanket.
Yarn per square
The default 0.62 yards per square comes from the Aries Astrology C2C Blanket pattern on Ravelry: 7 squares to 5 inches, and 2,650 to 2,700 yards for 40 × 56 inches, which is 4,368 squares. For a better number, unravel a 5 × 5 swatch, measure the yarn and divide by 25. A DK or bulky yarn changes both the square size and the yardage, so measure for those.
